ITHACA, NY - The Brown men's tennis team improved to 19-5 on the season with a dominating 6-1 victory over Cornell to improve to 3-0 in the Ivy League and remain undefeated. With Columbia's victory over Yale on Friday, it sets up a match of unbeatens for Saturday at noon in New York, NY.
Brown won the doubles point, sweeping the three matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles action. Seniors Adil Shamasdin (Pickering, ONT) and Nicholas Goldberg (Albuquerque, NM) earned an 8-5 win at #1, while sophomore Eric Thomas (Cincinnati, OH) and freshman Saurabh Kohli (Colaba, Mumbai, India) posted an 8-4 win at #2. Juniors Philip Charm (Concord, MA) and Richard Moss (Johannesburg, South Africa) rounded out the doubles with an 8-3 win at #3.
Brown claimed the first three singles matches to clinch the win and also won at #4 and #5 for the 6-1 final. Shamasdin led the way with a 6-4, 6-1 win at #1, while Goldberg earned a dominating 6-2, 6-1 win at #2. Thomas posted a 7-5, 6-1 victory at #3 to clinch the match, while Moss earned a 6-3, 4-6, (8) win at #4. Charm earned the other singles win for the Bears, with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at #5.
#38 Brown and #58 Columbia face off Saturday at noon in a critical battle for first place in the Ivy League. A win by the Bears would put them in the drivers' seat for the Ivy title.
