#52 Penn Edges #70 Bears, 4-3

PHILADELPHIA, PA - In a rematch of the 2005 ECAC Championship, the #70 Brown men's tennis team (14-9, 1-1) fell to #52 Penn for the second time this season, dropping a close, 4-3, battle to the Quakers on Saturday afternoon. The Bears won all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and then went up 3-1 with wins at #5 and #6 singles, but Penn was able to come back to earn the victory, its 12th straight win.

Doubles action was as close as it could get, with Brown winning at #1 and #2 with a 9-8 score. Senior Phil Charm (Concord, MA) and Chris Lee (Sudbury, MA) earned a 9-8 (6) win at #1, while junior Dan Hanegby (Herzliya, Israel) and sophomore Saurabh Kohli (Colaba, Mumbai, India) picked up a 9-8 (5) win at #2. Brown also won at #3 doubles, where junior Eric Thomas (Cincinnati, OH) and freshman Sam Garland (Bradenton, FL) posted an 8-5 win.

After Penn tied the match at 1-1 with a three-set (7-5, 2-6, 6-0) victory over Thomas at #3 singles, Lee gave Brown a 2-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #6. The Bears went up 3-1 after Kohli netted a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win at #5, but Penn claimed the match at #4, winning 6-1, 6-2, to come to within 3-2. The Quakers tied the match at 3-3 with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory at #1 singles, setting up a deciding match at #2 singles, which was the closest match of the day. After losing the first set, 7-6 (10), freshman Basu Ratnam (Oyster Bay, NY) came back to win the second set 6-4. However, Penn claimed the win with a third-set, 6-2 victory to remain undefeated (3-0) in the Ivy League.

After eight straight road matches, the Bears return home this Friday to host Cornell at 2:00 p.m.
