#70 Bears Open Ivy Season with 5-2 win over Princeton

PRINCETON, NJ - The 70th-ranked Brown men's tennis team (14-8, 1-0) snapped its six-match skid on Friday afternoon when it opened its Ivy season with a 5-2 victory over Princeton. Despite the score, the match was close throughout, as Brown was down, 4-1, in two of the doubles matches before winning all three to earn the doubles point. In singles action, Brown won a total of four sets by either a 7-5 score or a 7-6 score, including junior Eric Thomas' (Cincinnati, OH) 7-5, 7-5 sweep at #3 singles.

In doubles action, Brown swept the point, but won each of the three matches by just two games, including identical 9-7 scores at #1 and #2. Senior Phil Charm (Concord, MA) and freshman Chris Lee (Sudbury, MA) found themselves down, 4-1, at #1. But they battled back to earn the 9-7 win. At #3, Thomas and freshman Sam Garland (Bradenton, FL) were also down, 4-1, but they stormed back to post an 8-6 victory. Junior Dan Hanegby (Herzlyia, Israel) and sophomore Saurabh Kohli (Colaba, Mumbai, India) picked up the other doubles win with a 9-7 score at #2.

In addition to Thomas' win at #3 singles, #63 Hanegby led they way with a 7-5, 6-3 win at #1. Kohli earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at #5, while Lee posted his first Ivy win with a 7-6, 6-2 victory at #6.

In a rematch of the 2005 ECAC Championship, the Bears will face #52 Penn, winners of 11 straight matches, on Saturday, April 8, at 12:00 noon.
