March 29, 2005

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The 51st-ranked Brown men's tennis team (15-4) came from behind to down the 54th-ranked University of New Mexico (4-5), 5-2, in Albuquerque this afternoon.

The Lobos jumped out to a 1-0 lead after solidifying the doubles point with wins at #2 and #3 doubles. Brown's lone doubles win came at #1 where the 32nd-ranked pair of senior Adil Shamasdin (Pickering, ONT) and junior Philip Charm (Concord, MA) upset the fourth-ranked pair in the country, 9-7, at #1 doubles.

Brown fired back to take a 2-1 lead thanks to Charm's 6-0, 6-2 win at #4 singles and sophomore Eric Thomas' (Cincinnati, OH) 6-3, 6-2 win over the 100th-ranked player in the country at #3.

However, a loss by 76th-ranked Shamasdin at #1, tied the match at 2-2, but that was as close as the Lobos would get. Brown won the final three singles matches, all in three sets, by winning the last two sets after dropping the first set to the Lobos.

Junior Richard Moss (Johannesburg, South Africa) earned a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at #5 to give Brown a 3-2 lead, while freshman Saurabh Kohli (Colaba, Mumbai, India) posted a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at #6 to give the Bears a 4-2 lead. Senior Albuquerque native Nicholas Goldberg picked up the fifth point for the Bears with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win at #2 singles.

The Bears return to action on Friday, April 1, when they take on #7 Pepperdine at 4:00 p.m. EST in Malibu, CA.
