Feb. 21, 2007
Williamsburg, VA - On the strength of its play in singles, the #75 William and Mary men's tennis team posted a 4-3 victory over #65 Brown (9-3) on Tuesday afternoon. After winning the doubles point, Brown won just two singles matches as the Tribe claimed the close victory.
The momentum started in the Tribe's direction during the doubles slate as William & Mary picked up an upset win at #2 doubles over the 15th-ranked pair in the country, senior Eric Thomas (Cincinnati, OH) and sophomore Basu Ratnam (Oyster Bay, NY). However, the 25th-ranked pair in the country, senior Dan Hanegby (Herzlyia, Israel) and sophomore Chris Lee (Sudbury, MA) earned an 8-3 win at #1 and senior Zach Pasanen (North Andover, MA) and junior Saurabh Kohli (Colaba, Mumbai, India) claimed an 8-5 win at #3 as Brown picked up the 1-0 lead.
The Tribe tied the match at 1-1 with a win at #1 singles and then took a 2-1 lead with a win at the #3 spot. William & Mary increased its lead to 3-1 moments later with a win at #4. However, with the other three singles matches headed to third sets, the result of the match hung in the balance and William & Mary was able to take a win at #5 singles to clinch the victory.
Pasanen won his match at #6 singles and Hanegby followed with a win at #2 singles, upsetting the 49th-ranked player in the country, for the 4-3 final.
