Sam has performed well for the Bears since that year as well. Last year as a junior he and Noah Gardner '09 stepped up to beat the #53-ranked doubles team in the country from East Tennessee State University and then the #42 team in the country from Michigan. They garnered 15 wins as a doubles team, which tied them for 10th on Brown's All-Time wins list.
This year Garland and Gardner advanced all the way to the Finals of the ITA Regional Championship, as they just narrowly missed qualifying for the ITA National Championships.
Garland grew up in Jamestown, Rhode Island but moved to Bradenton, Florida in 2000. He attended Saint Stephens Episcopal School where he led his team at the #1 position while posting a 3.1 grade point average. In 2004 he helped his team capture the Class 1A State Championships. He was ranked #7 in the Florida Section in the 16's while attaining a national ranking of #17. His career aspirations are to work in the sports world possibly as a sports agent or for a professional sports organization.
Sam comes from a family rich in Brown tradition, as his parents Thomas and Judith were graduates in 1974. His older brother Taylor graduated in 2000 after playing tennis for the Bears, and his sister Whitney graduated in 2006. Off the court, Sam's interests include golfing, watersports, olympic weight-lifting and slow-pitch softball. His concentration is urban studies with a focus on the built environment.
