Men's Tennis Opens Ivy Season with 5-2 Win over Penn

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown men's tennis team (12-6, 1-0) opened its Ivy schedule with a 5-2 win over visiting Penn on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Center courts. The Bears won all three doubles matches and then claimed four of six singles matches to post the victory, while improving to 12-6 overall.

Brown took a 1-0 lead in the match after wins by junior Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY) and sophomore Michael Riechmann (Houston, TX) at #3 doubles (8-3) and junior Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica) and sophomore William Spector (Weston, MA) at #2 doubles (8-5). Senior Mike Hill (Topsham, ME) combined with sophomore Justin To (Hong Kong, China) to post an 8-6 win at #1, as Brown won all three doubles matches.

Hill increased Brown's lead to 2-0 with a victory at #2 singles (6-4, 6-4), while Riechmann gave Brown a 3-0 advantage with a win at #1 singles (7-6 (4), 6-4). The Quakers got on the board with a win at the #4 position and then closed Brown's lead to 3-2 with a victory at #3 singles. Sophomore Daniel Hirschberg (Westport, CT) clinched the decision for Brown with his 6-3, 6-4 win at #6 singles, while Burke closed out the match with a victory at #5. 

Brown continues action on Sunday, April 7, when it hosts Princeton in a 2:00 p.m. match.
