The Brown men's tennis team is opening its season this weekend with a home tournament, the Brown Invitational. The competition, which runs from Sept. 14-16, has been a success for the Bears in the past. In 2011, men's tennis won seven out of 12 draws. Each player will have a chance to join in the action, with a lot of match play in both singles and doubles. The team hopes to try out some new doubles combinations.
Last season, the Bears finished with a strong ranking of #50 in the NCAA.
"We're certainly proud of that," said head coach David Schwarz on the team's 2011-2012 standings. "It's the highest Brown has finished in the ITA rankings in a while."
The two captains, junior Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, ONT) and senior Tom Deighton (London, England), will be leading a skilled group of underclassmen. Junior Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica) and sophomore William Spector (Weston, MA), along with Azargui, were named to the All-Ivy team for their performance last year.
One of the highlights of the 2011-2012 season was the squad's win against Columbia last April. The team swept all three doubles matches and won four out of six singles matches, upsetting the #37 ranked Lions 5-2.
"We had some tight Ivy matches, and we really turned the corner on that good win over Columbia," said Coach Schwarz. "We'll need some more like that if we want to contend for the Ivy Championship."
The Bears hope to add strength to the top of their lineup to complement the solid core of players they already have. Although practices began just last week, the team is eagerly anticipating its first tournament at Brown.
