Bears Split a Pair of Matches at Virginia Tech; Defeat Longwood, 7-0 & Fall to #30 Hokies, 4-3

BLACKSBURG, VA – The Brown men's tennis team (7-2) traveled to Virginia Tech over the weekend for a pair of matches. The Bears earned on 7-0 victory over Longwood, played at Virginia Tech on Saturday, and then were narrowly defeated by the 30th-ranked Hokies, 4-3, on Sunday. Senior Kendrick Au (St. John's, NF) led the Bears, winning all four of his matches over the weekend, playing at the #3 position in both singles and doubles.

Against Longwood, the Bears stormed out to a 1-0 lead by winning at #3 and #2 doubles to claim the point. Freshman Soufiane Azargui (Burlington, ONT) increased Brown's lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win at #5 singles, while senior Charlie Posner (Cambridge, MA) claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win at #6 to give Brown a 3-0 lead. Freshman Sam Fife (Scarsdale, NY) clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-2 win at #2 singles.

Brown would close the match with wins at #4, 6-1, 6-4 by sophomore Timmy Klanke (Potomac, MD), at #1, 6-2, 6-3 by sophomore Mike Hill (Topsham, ME), and at #3, 7-6 (2), 6-1 by Au.

On Sunday against Virginia Tech, the Bears again won the doubles point to take an early, 1-0, lead. After dropping the match at #2 doubles, the freshman duo of Azargui and Brandon Burke (Kingston, Jamaica) earned an 8-6 win at #1 to tie the doubles action at 1-1. Au and Fife clinched the point with a 9-8 (3) win at #3.

However, Brown could not continue its momentum in singles, as the Hokies won the first four matches off the courts to come back and clinch the victory. Azargui (6-4, 2-6, 7-5) and Au (1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4) closed the match with wins at #5 and #3, respectively.

The Bears continue action on Wednesday, March 2, when they travel to the Weymouth Club to take on Boston College at 5:00.
