Bears Edged by Penn, 4-3, in Ivy Opener

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Brown men’s tennis team (10-10, 0-1) dropped a 4-3 decision to Penn (11-5, 1-1) in its 2010 Ivy opener Friday afternoon at the Quakers’ Lott Courts. The Bears claimed the doubles point with wins at #1 and #3, but Penn posted singles wins at #1, #2, #3, and #5 to earn the 4-3 victory. Two of those wins could have gone either way, as they were decided in three sets, including the match-clinching win at #3 singles. Facing freshman Tom Deighton (London, England) and the third set tied at 4-4, Adam Schwartz was able to hold on for a 6-4 win to clinch the fourth point for the Quakers.

In doubles action, the Bears received wins from senior Nathaniel Gorham (Los Altos Hills, CA) and junior Kendrick Au (St. John’s, NF) at #1 (8-4) and junior Charlie Posner (Cambridge, MA) and freshman Mike Hill (Topsham, ME) at #3 (8-1).

The Quakers tied the match with a win at #5 singles and then went up, 2-1, with a victory at #2. Hill then won his singles match at #4, 6-3, 6-4, to tie the score at 2-2, before a Penn win at #1 gave the Quakers a 3-2 lead. Penn clinched the win at #3, while freshman Timmy Klanke (Potomac, MD) claimed a win at #6 (7-6, 6-7, 2-0, ret) to account for the 4-3 score.
