Bears Defeat Dartmouth; Fall to Navy in Season-Opener

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Brown men's swimming and diving team opened it 2008-2009 season on Saturday afternoon, November 22nd, in a tri-meet with Navy and Dartmouth. The Bears earned a 183-117 victory over the Big Green and narrowly fell to the Midshipmen, 155-131. Brown had a solid day all-around, winning eight of the 16 events, including three victories for sophomore Ryan Kikuchi (Temecula, CA) and two wins for senior Daniel Ricketts (Baltimore, MD).
Brown opened the meet with a second place finish in the 200 Medley Relay, as the team of Kikuchi, sophomore Conor Carlucci (New City, NY), senior Richard Alexander (Victoria, BC), and senior Benjamin Zlotoff (Woodbridge, CT) swam a time of 1:46.03.
Sophomore Sam Speroni (Sandwich, MA) was Brown's top finisher in the 800 Free, clocking in at 8:51.07 to finish in sixth place, while Ricketts let Brown in the 200 Free with a time of 1:52.51, good for 2nd.
The Bears won the next two events, as Kikuchi picked up his first victory with a time of 58.53 in the 100 Free, while Carlucci swam a time of 1:05.53 to win the 100 Breast.
Alexander led the Bears in the 200 Fly, taking fourth with a time of 2:07.88, while Zlotoff led Brown in the 50 Free, earning fifth with a time of 24.32.
In a break from swimming, junior CJ Kambe (Unionville, CT) took third in the 1-Meter Dive, scoring a 294.70.
The Bears then picked up wins in the first two events after the 1-Meter Dive, as Ricketts claimed first in the 100 Free (51.69) and Kikuchi won the 200 Back (2:05.85).
Following a fourth place finish in the 200 Breast by Carlucci (2:27.76) and a ninth place finish in the 400 Free by Speroni (4:23.56), the Bears closed out the meet by winning the final four events.
Ricketts led a 1-2 sweep in the 100 Fly with a time of 57.40, while Alexander took second with a time of 57.49. Kambe picked up a win in the 3-Meter Dive, scoring a 317.90, while Kikuchi won his final event of the day with a time of 3:17.90 in the 200 IM.
Brown closed out the meet by taking first and second in the 400 Free Relay. Brown's team of junior Tucker Wetmore (Weston, MA), Alexander, Ricketts, and freshman Alexander Tin (Milton, MA) posted a time of 3:30.53 to win the relay, while the team of Zlotoff, junior JD Pinto (Greenwich, CT), senior David Koweek (Hudson, NY), and freshman James Hunter (Canfield, OH) earned a time of 3:37.78 to take second.
The Bears resume action December 5-7 when they travel to Princeton, NJ to take part in the Princeton Invitational. The scores from the meet will also count as the dual meet between the Bears and the Tigers.
