Bears Fall to Yale, 178-122, in Final Regular Season Meet

BRISTOL, RI - The Brown men's swimming and diving team (3-5, 3-4) hosted Yale in its final meet of the season at Roger Williams University on Saturday, February 16th. The Bulldogs won 12 of the 16 events to cruise to the victory over the Bears, who were led by senior Peter Volosin (Roanoke, VA), who won both the 1000 and 500 free, and junior Daniel Ricketts (Baltimore, MD), who earned a victory in the 200 free.

The meet started with Brown earning second in the 200 medley relay as the team of senior Kevin Hug (Tampa, FL), freshman Conor Carlucci (New City, NY), Ricketts, and senior Brian Kelly (Weston, MA) swam a time of 1:33.48.

Volosin then led a one-two sweep of the 1000 free, posting a time of 9:26.75, while freshman Wallace Chandler (Glenside, PA) was second with a time of 9:35.09. Ricketts won the next event for the Bears, earning a time of 1:40.84 in the 200 free, but Yale went on to win the next eight straight to open up a big lead.

Hug led Brown in the 100 back, posting a time of 52.42, good for fourth, while Carlucci led the Bears in the 100 breast with a time of 59.15, good for third. Junior Richard Alexander (Victoria, BC) was Brown's top finisher in the 200 fly, placing third with a time of 1:53.06, while Kelly led Brown in the 50 free with a time of 21.09, just missing first place by .04. Junior David Koweek (Hudson, NY) earned third in the event with a time of 21.52.

In diving action, the Bears placed second and third in the 1-meter with freshman Jonathan Speed (Jupiter, FL) earning second with a score of 310.42, and sophomore CJ Kambe (Unionville, CT) placing third with a 295.35.

Brown earned second and third in the 100 free, with Kelly posting a time of 45.79 to place second and Koweek earning a time of 46.91 to place third. Freshman Ryunosuke Kikuchi (Temecula, CA) led Brown in the 200 back, placing second with a time of 1:50.78, while junior Brett McCrae (Pepper Pike, OH) placed second in the 200 breast (2:09.41) to lead the Bears in that event.

Volosin earned his second win of the afternoon, posting a time of 4:37.94 in the 500 free, while Chandler was third with a time of 4:40.41. However, Yale won three of the final four events to pick up the win.

Ricketts and Alexander were second and third in the 100 fly with times of 51.21 and 51.61, respectively, while Speed was second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 309.45. Kikuchi earned second in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.51 to close out the individual events.

Brown finished the meet with a first place finish in the 400 free relay, as the team of Koweek, Hug, Ricketts, and Kelly swam a time of 3:05.60. Brown's team of sophomore Zack Levko (Wildwood, MO), Chandler, senior Rob Glenn (Haddonfield, NJ), and freshman John Bailey (Meadville, PA) earned third with a time of 3:13.15.
