Men’s Swimming & Diving’s Gourley the Recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men's swimming & diving senior diver Sazzy Gourley (Charlotte, N.C.) has been selected as one of 27 Brown students awarded the Fulbright Scholarship. The program enables students to conduct research, study, or teach in over 140 countries.

Gourley will be traveling to South Korea for one year starting in July with the scholarship and will teach English at a secondary school. He chose to spend his time in South Korea due to taking a number of courses at Brown that studied the area, in addition to his interest to work in the sports industry, specifically the Olympics where PyeongChang will host the 2018 Winter Games.

"Sazzy is an ideal Fulbrighter because of his strong belief in community and interest in learning from and sharing with other cultures," said Linda Dunleavy, the Associate Dean of the College for Fellowships. "He has a warm personality and a genuine interest in listening and working with others--qualities that will serve him well as an English Teaching Assistant in South Korea. I'm confident that he is going to make an outstanding contribution to the program and serve as a wonderful representative of Brown and the United States."

Congress started the Fulbright Program in 1946, with the mission of developing common understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange. The two categories of the grant are: Research Grants and Teaching Assistantships.

Selection for the program is based on the quality of a proposed project, the strength and feasibility of the proposed project, the academic/professional preparation of the applicant, the applicant's language skills, and personal qualifications.

Serving as the Student Body Vice President as a junior and the Student Body President as a senior, Gourley works with student leaders to improve the quality of life for all students at Brown. He has been named a student representative on nine University-wide committees.

With the swimming & diving team, Gourley maintained a 4.0 GPA as an American Studies concentration while scoring in every Ivy League Championship in his four years. Gourley and his fellow diving teammates produced the third most points this season in the conference.
