SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND – The Brown men's swimming team (5-3, 1-3 Ivy League) earned a 119-62 victory over the Bryant Bulldogs in a non-league competition held at the Elizabeth and Malcom Chace Wellness Center on Thursday, January 24.
The Bears swept the individual events with eight different swimmers earning a victory over the course of the evening. Alex Pascal (Longmeadow, MA) grabbed Brown's first win of the evening, swimming a time of 1:45.07 in the 200 freestyle, and junior Tommy Glenn (Haddonfield, NJ) followed that up with a victory of his own in the 200 individual medley, clocking in at 1:58.13, more than three seconds ahead of his closest challenger.
Senior Michael Johnson (Cave Creek, AZ) earned a win in the 50 freestyle, just out-touching the runner-up in a time of 22.16 before Brian Barr (Martinsville, NJ) blew the field away in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 52.35 for the win. Jeffrey Strausser (Lafayette, CA) won a close race in the 100 freestyle, touching in 47.36, while co-captain Ian Slater (Lutherville, MD) turned in a dominant performance in the 100 backstroke, clocking in at 53.58.
Freshman Thomas Mercurio (Novato, CA) raced to the win in the 100 breaststroke, swimming at time of 59.72 for first place honors, and senior John Hug (Weatogue, CT) grabbed the last individual win of the day with a time of 4:51.91 in the 500 freestyle.
Both of Brown's relays were triumphant against Bryant as well, with the squad of Slater, Strausser, Barr and Jake Weber (Mill Valley, CA) clocking in at 1:38.11 to take the Bears' first win of the day. In the final event of the meet, the 200 freestyle relay, Edward Zhao (Vancouver, British Columbia), Oliver Diamond (Salt Lake City, UT), Matthew Luminais (Haverford, PA) and Weber combined for a time of 1:28.93 and the win.
The Bears will head to New York City on Saturday, January 26 for an Ivy League meet against the Columbia Lions, with the first race set to begin at 4:00pm.
