Bears Capture Hoehn Cup For 9th Place National Ranking

March 2, 2005

Cambridge, Mass. - The Men's Squash Team won the prestigious Hoehn Cup, defeating Williams, 6-3, in a sensational match at the Harvard Courts in front of a large crowd.

After wins by Brian Rifkin '06 and Edward Cerullo '08, the Bears could only squeeze one more match out at #2 through Dan Petrie '07. The team had three matches remaining and would need two more to capture the crown.

With Co-Captains Jay Beidler '05 at #7, and #1 Co-Captain Breck Bailey '06 both trailing at 1-2 down in games, and Senior Sean O'Boyle #4 tied 7-7 in the first game, the tide had turned firmly against Brown. It was looking bleak.

But this team has consistently performed beyond its limits this season and the Hoehn Cup title match was no exception. Wonderful fightbacks by Bailey and Beidler, who both won in five, and an exceptional display by O'Boyle, who won in three (dropping only one point in the last two games), saw the Bears through to a stunning victory, a 9th place National ranking and a very enjoyable van ride back to Providence!
