Gomez Named Ivy League Rookie of the Week in Men's Soccer
Nov. 6, 2001
PROVIDENCE, RI - Freshman goalkeeper Chris Gomez (Bellflower, CA) was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week in men's soccer for the week of November 5.
Gomez, a graduate of St. John Bosco High School in California, recorded two saves in a 1-0 victory against Yale on Saturday evening in New Haven, CT. He held the Bulldogs scoreless for 58:05, splitting time in net with fellow freshman David Mahoney (Wellesley, MA).
Overall, Gomez has recorded three shutouts this year for the Bears after taking over the starting role as a freshman when senior goalkeeper Peter Mahoney (Wellesley, MA) went down with an injury. Gomez has made 42 saves this season and boasts a 1.11 goals against average. The freshman has posted shutout victories over Tulsa, Columbia and Pennsylvania.
The victory over Yale keeps the Bears (5-7-2, 3-1-1 Ivy League) in contention for their second consecutive Ivy League title. This is Gomez's first Rookie of the Week honor.
