Providence, RI - The Brown men's soccer team will welcome defending national champion North Carolina along with Yale and Michigan to Stevenson Field for the fifth annual adidas/Brown Classic on September 13 and 15.
The tournament, which was cancelled last year due to the tragic events of Sept. 11, has featured such teams as Indiana, Georgetown and Boston College in the past. In 2000, Brown won the tournament for the first time since beginning the Classic in 1997.
North Carolina won its first ever men's soccer title last year defeating number one seeded Indiana, 2-0, in the finals. The Tar Heels went 21-4 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference on the year. With seven returning starters, North Carolina is expected to contend for the ACC title this season.
Michigan finished with a 10-7-1 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the Big Ten last season, in the program's second year as a varsity sport. The Wolverines lost to Indiana 1-0 in 3OT in the Big Ten semifinals. Michigan's 2002 seven-player recruiting class is one of the top-ranked in the nation.
Yale will be making its fourth consecutive appearance at the adidas/Brown Classic. The Bulldogs, who were also scheduled to take part in last year's Classic, won the tournament in 1998 and 1999. With seven seniors on their roster, the Bulldogs are expected to be a serious contender for the Ivy League title this year.
Coming off its second straight Ivy League Championship, Brown returns four players (Dustin Branan, Adom Crew, Julian Jordan and Jeff Larentowicz) who received All-Ivy honors last season. The Bears are the most successful program in Ivy soccer history having won six of the last eight Ivy League titles and 16 titles overall,
Brown will admit any Rhode Island Youth Soccer Association (RIYSA) player who is wearing an official RIYSA game shirt free to any one of the games to give them the opportunity to see top-level college soccer. The tournament will also have face painting, concessions and official Brown and adidas merchandise on site. The adidas/Brown Classic is also presented by the Courtyard Marriott and Rizzo Ford.
