Bears Second Half Rally Falls Short Against #21 Rhode Island
Nov. 7, 2004
Kingston, RI - The Brown men's soccer team fell 2-1 to in-state rival, #21 University of Rhode Island on Sunday in Kingston. The Rams scored a goal in the first half and added another early in the second half to earn the victory, their second straight against the Bears. Brown made it a one goal game with 22 minutes left to play in the very physical match but failed to get the equalizer. The Bears now stand at 8-6-2 on the year.
The Bears fought back hard after the Rams took a two goal lead, keeping the ball in the URI zone for much of the half. Sophomore Andrew Daniels scored the goal for the Bears with 67:43, his fifth of the season with the assist going to junior Brian Perry. The goal puts Daniels in a tie with junior Keith Caldwell for the team lead in goals scored this season. Perry set up a perfect shot for Daniels, who's chip shot from point blank range easily found its way past the Rams' keeper.
Brown out-shot the Rams 16-9, including a 12-3 margin in the second frame but failed to get another one past the keeper. Proving to be a bitter rivalry, six yellow cards were handed out in the match.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Gomez recorded six saves in net with the majority of them coming in the first half.
Brown will now set its focus on its crucial match against Dartmouth next Sunday at 1 p.m. in Hanover, NH. The Bears will be playing for a share of the Ivy Title. A win would give Brown a share of the Ivy Title with Dartmouth and a Princeton loss or tie at Yale on Saturday would give the Bears a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In the event Brown defeats Dartmouth and Princeton picks up a win against the Bulldogs as well, the three teams would share the title but Princeton would receive the automatic bid to the tournament since it defeated Brown and tied Dartmouth this season.
