Providence, RI - The Brown men's soccer team tallied two goals to cruise to a 2-0 victory over Cornell on Saturday evening at Stevenson Field. The Bears improved to 9-4-1 (3-1-0 Ivy), while the Big Red fell to 1-12-1 (0-4-0) with the loss. It was the seventh consecutive victory for Brown over Cornell dating back to a 1-1 tie during the 2001 season.
Senior Darren Howerton (Northboro, MA) blasted a low shot from 20 yards out on the left, which breezed by Cornell's Steve Lesser in goal and gave the Bears a 1-0 lead at the 34:21 mark. The Bears headed into halftime with a 10-3 lead in shots, and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Tallying just his second career goal, junior Iain Eldredge (Cumberland, MA) put one in from right in front of the net at the 65 minute mark to give Brown a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Jon Okafor (Verona, NJ) was credited with the assist, his second of the season.
Junior T.J. Thompson (Atkinson, NH) led Brown's attack with a total of six shots (two on goal). Thompson had some great looks and a few breakaways, but couldn't get one by Lesser, who picked up four saves in net for the Big Red. Brown sophomore Paul Grandstrand (Orono, MN) made two saves to earn his third shutout this season, and improve his record to 3-3-0. Brown outshot the Big Red 16-6, and had 14 corner kicks to just three for Cornell.
The Bears continue defense of their Ivy title when they meet Penn on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in Philadelphia. Brown won last year's meeting 3-0 in Providence.
