Bears Score in Overtime to Defeat #5 Boston College 1-0
Oct. 10, 2007
Providence, RI - Senior Laurent Manuel (New York, NY) led the #14 ranked Brown men's soccer team (8-1-1,1-0-0) to a 1-0 overtime victory over #5 Boston College (7-2-1, 4-0-0) on Wednesday night at Stevenson Field.
Although both teams were held scoreless during regulation, the Eagles and Bears battled throughout the entire game and each had their chances to score. In the first half, freshman Jon Okafor (Verona, NJ) almost got the Bears on the scoreboard at the 14 minute mark but the Eagles' goalkeeper, Chris Brown, blocked it from going in. Junior Will Lee (Morristown, NJ) nearly put one in during the second half that just went high, and junior Dylan Sheehan (Wolfville, NS) headed one just wide of the net.
But the Bears got the spark they needed from one of the team's top midfielders, Laurent Manuel. Just 2:42 into the 10-minute overtime, Manuel received a pass from Sheehan and nailed one into the low right corner of the net to end the game. The goal marked Manuel's first of the season, and the Bears' second consecutive over-time win.
The Bears led the Eagles in shots 16-10, but BC held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Brown's freshman goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand (Orono, MN), the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, remains flawless in goal with a 5-0-1 record, and recorded three saves on the night.
The Bears will travel to Harvard on Saturday to take on the #7 ranked Crimson for a 12:00 p.m. game.
