Men's Soccer Battles 25th Ranked Santa Clara to 2-2 Tie

San Francisco, CA - The men's soccer team earned a 2-2 tie with 25th ranked Santa Clara Friday evening at the Diadora Classic hosted by the University of San Francisco. The Bears, who came into the game off a 2-0 shutout against state rival Rhode Island and a 3-0 road record, stand at 3-2-2 on the season.

Santa Clara got on the board early in the game when the Broncos' Kirk Fronseca scored on a free kick from the top of the box at 6:47. Brown tied the game at the 38:44 mark when freshman Ibrahim Diane knocked in a long cross from junior Adom Crew inside the box. The goal was Diane's third of the season.

The half ended in a 1-1 knot. Both goalies, sophomore Christopher Gomez for Brown and Steve Cronin for Santa Clara, posted two saves each in 45 minutes of action.

Ten minutes into the second half, Brown took a 2-1 lead when Crew scored from the top of the box for his ninth goal of the season. Junior Matt Goldman picked up the assist on the play. With eight minutes left in the game, Santa Clara went on a breakaway and tied the game at 2-2 when Will Weatherly scored inside the box on a pass from Matt Upton.

At the end of regulation, the game remained in a deadlock forcing two ten minute overtime periods. Neither team was able to capitalize in the two periods, ending the game in a 2-2 tie.

Santa Clara out-shot Brown 15-5. Gomez recorded five saves in 110:00 minutes of action for the Bears. Cronin totaled two saves in 110:00 minutes for the Broncos.

The Bears continue action on Sunday Oct. 6 when they face Diadora host San Francisco at 2:00 p.m. PST.
