Oct. 1, 2002

Kingston, RI - The men's soccer team earned its first shutout of the 2002 season against state rival Rhode Island Tuesday night. Despite out-shooting the Bears 24-10, the Rams were unable to get on the board. Junior Adom Crew scored both goals for the Bears for a total of eight on the season. The Bears improve to 3-2-1 on the season and remain undefeated on the road at 3-0. The loss snaps Rhode Island's five game winning streak and puts them at 5-4-0 on the season.

The Rams had several opportunities to score in the first half with their quick speed but were unable to score. Sophomore goalkeeper Christopher Gomez made three tough saves for the Bears with two coming within one minute of each other in the 37th and 38th minute of the game. Brown was out shot 7-2 in the first half.

Brown started the second half with two quick shots on goal. Rams goalie Michael Charles came out of net to cut-off a shot by junior Adom Crew from ten yards out. Gomez helped keep Rhode Island scoreless with two spectacular saves early in the second half. The Rams got off two back to back shots from eight yards out but Gomez was able to get a hand on both shots.

In the 67th minute, Brown got on the board when senior Evan Ryan took a shot from 15 yards out. The Ram's Charles batted the ball out but Crew quickly collected the rebound and chipped the ball into the left corner.

Crew scored again to put the Bears up 2-0 in the 79th minute. Junior Matt Goldman crossed the ball to the far side to Crew from five yards out for the goal. Gomez kept the shutout in place when once again he was able to knock out a point blank shot from six yards out. Gomez recorded eight saves in 90 minutes of action.

Brown will be back in action this weekend when it travels to San Francisco for the Diadora Classic. The Bears will face Santa Clara on Friday Oct. 4 starting at 5:00 p.m. and San Francisco on Sunday Oct. 6 at 2:00 p.m.
