Sept. 24, 2003
Providence, RI - The 13th ranked Brown men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to state rival Rhode Island on Wednesday Sept. 24 at home. The Bears took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half but the Rams scored two unanswered goals, including the game-winner with just four minutes left to play in the game, to take the 2-1 win. Brown drops to 3-2 on the season while Rhode Island improves to 3-5 and regains possession of the Wakefield Cup. Brown was victorious in last year's match-up, 2-0, in Kingston.
Brown jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 23:10 mark when senior Matt Goldman (Knoxville, TN) volleyed in a free kick, which hit the crossbar, taken by junior Jeff Larentowicz (West Chester, PA). The goal was Goldman's second of the season and second of his career.
Rhode Island responded with 1:24 left to play in the first half to tie the game 1-1. The Ram's Sasha Gotsmanov netted his first of two goals on the night inside the box. Gotsmanov tallied the game-winner at the 86:05 mark, unassisted, handing Brown its first home loss of the season.
The Bears outshot the Rams 17-15 in the game with junior goalkeeper Chris Gomez (Bellflower, CA) posting five saves. Larentowicz, junior Marcos Romaneiro (North Brunswick, NJ) and senior Seth Quidachay-Swan (San Francisco, CA) lead Brown with three shots each in the game. Sophomore Jamie Granger (Lebanon, NJ) and freshman Chris Ordonez (North Bay Village, FL) made their collegiate debuts in the match.
Brown will continue action on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7:00 p.m. at home versus Sacred Heart.
