Providence, RI - Junior forward Dylan Sheehan has once again led the Brown men's soccer team to victory with a first-half goal to defeat visiting St. Francis College 1-0 on Tuesday night at Stevenson Field.
The ninth-ranked Bears by Soccer America, continues its undefeated streak, moving to 5-0-0 on the season while the Terriers dropped to 2-4-1 overall.
Bruno took control of the game from the start, and dominated the Terriers on both ends of the field. Brown had some great opportunities to score in the first half, out-shooting St. Francis 12-5. Junior Darren Howerton (Northboro, MA) almost put one in at the 10-minute mark but hit the crossbar, and senior defender Matt Britner (Halifax, NS) had a chance to knock one in after a St. Francis foul in the box. Britner stepped in to take the free kick and blasted one to the low left corner, but goalkeeper Chris Antonino, who tallied 11 saves for the night, dove and made a great save.
Brown finally got on the scoreboard in the 36th minute thanks to the terrific combo of Howerton and Sheehan. Howerton sent a corner kick directly in the middle of the box to be met by Sheehan's head for the only goal of the night. Brown took a 1-0 lead, and eventually won the game.
Brown had even more scoring opportunities in the second-half, but couldn't seem to find the back of the net. Bruno out-shot the Terriers 16-7 in the second half, and 28-12 for night. Freshman goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand (Orono, MN) recorded five saves on the night and posted his first shutout of the season.
Tonight's goal for Sheehan marks his fifth consecutive goal and the assist for Howerton is his fourth. Sheehan is leading the Bears in points with 11, and Howerton is second with six.
The Bears are back in action this weekend, as they head out west to compete in a tournament at the University of San Diego. They will challenge USD on Friday, Sept. 21 at 10:00 p.m. EST, and then Cal Irvine at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23.
