Dallas, TX - The No. 17 Brown men's soccer team (3-0-0) remained undefeated Friday night, defeating the University of Tulsa (2-2-0) in the opening round of the SMU-adidas Tournament, 3-0. Senior forward Andrew Daniels (Milwaukee, WI), one of the team's top returning scorers, notched his first goal of the season to put Brown ahead, then freshmen Chris Roland (Rochester, NY) and Nick Elenz-Martin (Encinitas, CA) put home their first career goals to seal the victory.
The two teams played an even first half, with the Bears taking a 7-6 advantage on shots into the intermission. However, Bruno came storming out of the break. In the 59th minute, Daniels tapped in a centering pass by Roland for the 1-0 lead.
About nine minutes later, Daniels helped return the favor to Roland, as he and junior forward Kevin Davies set the rookie midfielder up for a 18-yard blast from just inside the box. The Daniels-Davies combo set Elenz-Martin up for his goal just over a minute later, as the rookie sent a missile in from 20 feet out.
Sophomore keeper Jarrett Leech (Manakin-Sabot, VA) had five saves to pick up the win. With the game well in hand, senior keeper David Semenza (Honolulu, HI) saw his first action of the year, making two saves in nearly eight minutes of work to preserve the shutout.
The Bears will get their toughest test of the season on Saturday, as they face off against the No. 2 Southern Methodist Mustangs. Kickoff is at 8:30 p.m. eastern time.
