#12 Men's Soccer Picks Up First Win of the Season Against Villanova
Sept. 7, 2008
Providence, RI -
Junior Nick Elenz-Martin (Encinitas, CA) and sophomore Jon Okafor (Verona, NJ) each scored a goal to help lead the Brown men’s soccer team (1-1-0) to a 2-0 victory over the Villanova Wildcats (2-2-0) in the final game of the adidas-Brown Soccer Classic. Senior goalkeeper Jarrett Leech was selected as the tournament’s Defensive MVP, while Leech and freshman Evan Coleman (Amherst, MA) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Brown felt no effects from Friday night’s loss to St. John’s, as the squad came out fired up and ready to play. Scoring opportunities came early for Bruno, as senior co-captain Dylan Sheehan (Wolfville, NS) fired one toward the net that went just a bit high bouncing off the cross bar, as Okafor followed it up with a header that went wide of the goal. Elenz-Martin came up with Bruno’s first goal of the afternoon with the time at 13:13, after driving in a ball past Nova’s Chris Bresnahan. Assisting on the goal was sophomore David Walls (Leeds, England) and senior Rhett Bernstein (San Diego, CA).
Just over a minute later, Okafor retrieved a ball that bounced off a Villanova defenders chest, and nailed it into the back of the net to put Brown ahead by two. Bruno’s defense gave a stalwart effort this afternoon, including Leech who picked up five saves in his debut in the net. Villanova out shot the Bears 19-13, seven of those 19 coming from midfielder Michael Seamon, and also led in corner kicks, 4-1. Goalkeeper Brensahan tallied three saves on the night, and received his second loss of the season.
Up next, Brown will compete in the Aaron Olitsky Memorial/Nike Classic in South Carolina from Sept. 12-14. Brown is scheduled to challenge Furman on Friday at 5:00 p.m., and will then take on the College of Charleston on 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
