PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Toby Howell (Bradenton, Fla.) netted a pair of goals to lead the Brown men's soccer team past Boston University, 2-1, in Tuesday evening's non-conference match at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown improved to 5-1-1 in the final tune-up before the Ivy League opener at Columbia on Saturday. Boston University dropped to 2-6-1 on the season.
Senior keeper Joey Cipicchio (Columbus, Ohio) made one save in net to pick up the win, allowing the lone goal on a penalty kick, while Michael Bernardi recorded two stops on the other end.
Howell scored his first of two goals just 10:14 into the contest. Sophomore Daniel Schiller (Glenview, Ill.) gained possession in BU territory and sent a pass from the left side to Howell, who quickly flipped a shot over the reach of Bernardi for the early lead. BU held a 7-4 lead in shots at halftime.
Brown remained in control until the 78th minute, when Tori Knutsson was tripped up in the box and then buried the following penalty kick, evening the score with his first goal of the season.
The game did not remain tied for long, however, as Howell found the back of the net just over one minute later at 78:48. After Quinn English (Milwaukee, Wis.) had a shot blocked, the ball bounced around a few players in front of the BU goal and eventually came to Howell, who blasted a shot into the back right corner of the net for his fourth tally of the season.
The Terriers threatened with an equalizer with 4:30 remaining, but the goal was called back after it was determined that a handball redirected a shot into the net. The Bears held the Terriers to without a shot the rest of the way to secure the win.
Boston outshot the Bears, 10-9, while the Bears won the battle for corner kicks, 3-1.
Brown will visit Columbia on Saturday in the Ivy League opener at 1 PM.
