Men’s Soccer Draws Even with Columbia, 1-1, in Ivy Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) scored an early goal for the Brown men's soccer team as the Bears played Columbia to a 1-1 draw in the Ivy League opener for both teams Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field.

Brown (5-3-1, 0-0-1) outshot Columbia by a 13-10 margin, while the Lions moved to 4-2-1 overall.

Chow opened up the scoring in the ninth minute with his third goal in the last three games. On a corner kick, Chow blasted a ball into the box, bending the shot around the keeper and into the back of the net for his team-high fourth tally of the season.

Alex Bangerl evened the score at 36:54 with an equally impressive goal, as he followed a rebound with a bicycle kick and hit the top right corner of the net. Arthur Bosua earned the assist on the play. Brown outshot Columbia, 7-6, in the opening half, while each team had seven corner kicks apiece in the stanza.

Brown edged Columbia in shots during the second half, 4-2, but the home team's best chance came at 82:43 when Tyler Long (Clarksville, Tenn.) rattled a shot off the crossbar, sending the game into overtime.

Brown had another strong opportunity near the end of the first overtime with a shot off the post, but neither side allowed the game winner over 20 minutes, as the game ended in a draw.

Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) had one save for the Bears, while Zach Adler turned away five shots. The two teams combined for 22 corner kicks with 11 attempts apiece.

Brown will host crosstown rival Providence College on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7 PM.
