Chow Powers Brown Men’s Soccer Past URI, 2-1, in Overtime

KINGSTON, R.I. – Sophomore Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) netted a pair of goals, including the game winner in overtime, to lift the Brown men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Rhode Island Saturday at the URI Soccer Complex.

Brown snapped a three-game skid to improve to 4-3 overall, while URI dropped to 3-5-1 on the season.

Chow scored both goals for the Bears, highlighted by the game-winning goal at 93:30 in extra time, his second overtime winner of the season. Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) registered seven saves to pick up the win, while Nils Leifhelm stopped four shots for the Rams.

Chow gave the Bears the early lead in the 16th minute with his second goal of the season. He rifled a shot past the reach of Leifhelm across the box and into the back corner of the net. Nico Lozada (Dallas, Texas) earned an assist on the play.

URI tied up the contest late in the opening half at 39:17 as Wesley Matthews scored on a header off a corner. Brown outshot the Rams, 7-5, the first half.

Rhode Island carried over its momentum in the second half, outshooting the visitors by an 11-2 margin, but Hanson racked up four saves in the frame to force overtime.

In overtime, Chow fielded a pass from Nate Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.) and converted a shot from the far side to lift the Bears to victory, notching his third tally of the season.
