PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Nate Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.) scored the lone goal of the game in the 63rd minute to lift the Brown men's soccer team past Bryant, 1-0, in Friday night's season opener at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown (1-0-0) outshot the Bulldogs by a 14-5 margin, including nine shots on target. Bryant fell to 0-2-0 on the young season.
The Bears opened with a pair of chances early in the contest, starting at 7:43, when Jack Hagstrom (Middleton, Wis.) and Pomeroy headed consecutive chances into the arms of Bryant keeper Nick Stewart.
A late Bryant foul just outside the box gave the Bears a free kick during the final seconds of the half, but Eric Sugarman's (Livingston, N.J.) curved shot was denied by Stewart to keep the game scoreless. Brown enjoyed a 7-2 shot advantage during the opening 45 minutes.
Pomeroy put the Bears on top at 62:33 with his first goal of the season. Nico Lozada (Dallas, Texas) sent a ball from the right side into the box, where Pomeroy gained control and hit the bottom corner of the net for the one-goal lead. The senior captain had another chance later in the second half, but sent the ball just wide of the net.
Bryant had one final opportunity in the waning seconds of regulation due to a Brown foul just outside the box. Nevertheless, Chris McCormick's last attempt was blocked as Brown sealed the win.
Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) had one save for the Bears, while Stewart stopped eight shots for the Bulldogs.
Brown returns to action on Friday, Sept. 9 when the Bears host Georgia State at 7 PM.
