Men’s Soccer Tops Columbia, 2-1, in Ivy Opener

NEW YORK – Rookie Jack Hagstrom (Middleton, Wis.) and senior Will Cross (Nashville, Tenn.) scored back-to-back second-half goals to power the Brown men's soccer team past Columbia, 2-1, in the Ivy League opener for both teams Friday night in New York City.

Brown picked up its second straight win to improve to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League, while Columbia fell to 4-2-1 on the season.

Columbia raced out to an early lead with the opening goal in the fifth minute of play. Andrew Tinaro sent a cross into the box for Arthur Bosua, who flicked a header over a defender and keeper Erik Hanson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) for the early advantage.

Columbia held a 7-3 advantage in shots during the first half.

Brown rallied back with a pair of goals midway through the second stanza. Hagstrom evened the score at 70:26 with his team-high fourth goal of the season, when he converted a header into the back of the net following a corner. Fellow freshman Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) picked up an assist on the play.

The Bears kept up the pace with the go-ahead goal at 76:41. Sophomore Quinn English (Milwaukee, Wis.) launched a long throw-in into the box, before Cross gained control in the middle of a scramble and beat Columbia's Kyle Jackson to push the visitors in front, 2-1.

Columbia threatened with consecutive shots in the 87th minute, as well as a final shot by Joe Morris with less than one minute remaining, but the Brown backline held strong to preserve the lead and seal the win.

Hanson made five saves for the Bears, while Jackson had one save on the other end. Columbia outshot the Bears, 13-9.

Brown kicks off a three-game homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 6 when the Bears host Boston College at 7 p.m. Tickets for all Brown men's soccer games can be purchased online, by calling the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or by walking up to the box office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
