PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior keeper Mitch Kupstas (Suwanee, Ga.) made seven saves and posted a shutout for the second straight contest as the Brown men's soccer team played Vermont to a scoreless tie Friday evening at Stevenson Field.
Brown moves to 2-3-2 on the season, while the Catamounts stand at 5-2-1 overall.
Vermont outshot the Bears by a 13-9 margin, including 7-2 in the second half, but the Bears outshot the visitors in overtime, 4-0. Kupstas made seven stops for his third shutout of the season, and second in as many games. Conor Leland made two saves on the other end for the Catamounts.
After a scoreless opening half, Brown kicked off the second half with three corner kicks in the first 10 minutes, but the Catamounts turned away the early attack. Vermont took control the rest of the way with a five-shot edge in the stanza, but the teams were still scoreless after 90 minutes to force extra time.
Both defenses took charge in the first overtime period, as each team held the opposite side without a shot, forcing a second overtime period. Brown had a pair of chances midway through the second overtime, but Ben Maurey (Downington, Pa.) had a shot blocked and Daniel Taylor's (Greenwich, Conn.) bid went high over the net. With less than a minute remaining, Tim Whalen (Amston, Conn.) had a final shot blocked as the two teams ended tied, 0-0.
In addition to Whalen, who led the team with three shots, junior Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) also recorded a shot on target. Brown won the battle for corner kicks, 12-6.
The Bears return to action on Sunday when they visit Fairfield at 1 p.m.
