PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Voltaire Escalona (Blue Bell, Pa.) scored late in the second half, but the Bears could not climb back from an early deficit as the Brown men's soccer team fell to Dartmouth, 3-1, in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Stevenson Field.
Brown wraps up the season at 7-7-3 overall and 3-2-2 in Ivy League play, while the Big Green finish at 6-7-4 on the season and 1-6 in league action.
Dartmouth opened up the scoring just 51 seconds into the first half when Gabe Hoffman-Johnson knocked in a rebound past the reach of Brown keeper Josh Weiner (Armonk, N.Y.) for the early lead.
The Big Green added another goal in the 45th minute when Colin Heffron was position with the ball near the goal line, turned around behind a Brown defender and flipped the ball into the back of the net to give the visitors the 2-0 advantage at halftime. Brown outshot the Big Green, 9-6, in the opening 45 minutes.
Dartmouth tacked on its third goal in the 58th minute when Alex Adelabu drove down the center of the field and through the Brown defense before beating Weiner one-on-one to lift the Big Green on top, 3-0.
Brown jumped on the board in the 82nd minute as Escalona received a pass from sophomore Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) at the top left of the box and blasted a shot into the back right corner of the net to trim the deficit to two, 3-1. Despite a corner kick attempt in the final minute of play, the Bears could not find the back of the net as the Big Green held on for the victory.
Weiner made three saves in net for the Bears, while James Hickok recorded six saves on the other end. Brown outshot the Big Green, 16-11, and won the battle for corner kicks, 8-1.
