PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Led by junior midfielder Daniel Taylor's (Greenwich, Conn.) strike in the 105th minute, the Brown men's soccer team claimed a key 2-1 double overtime victory over Ivy League rival Penn on Saturday at Stevenson Field.
Senior goalkeeper Josh Weiner (Armonk, N.Y.) improved to 6-5-3 this season, stopping five shots in the win. Tyler Kinn fell to 4-8-1 for the Quakers as he turned aside one shot in the loss.
The Bears boasted the better opportunities in the first half as Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) had his point-blank header denied by Kinn just before Voltaire Escalona (Blue Bell, Pa.) struck in the 32nd minute. The senior took a feed from Alex Markes (Valencia, Calif.) and blasted a shot into the lower right corner past Kinn to put the Bears up 1-0.
Brown looked poised to salt the game away until a late strike from Penn's Duke Lacroix knotted the game in the 78th minute.
The teams battled evenly for the remainder of regulation and through one session of overtime. The Bears handed the Quakers their first conference loss of the season as Daniel Taylor took a feed from Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and deposited it into the lower right corner to give Brown the dramatic victory.
With the win, the Bears improve to 6-6-3 (2-1-2 Ivy) while the Quakers drop to 6-8-1 (3-1-1 Ivy).
Brown will hit the road for a conference battle against Yale on Nov. 9 before hosting Dartmouth in the season finale on Nov. 16.
