ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) scored the lone goal of the game with 20 seconds left in the first half and the defense took care of the rest as the Brown men's soccer team blanked Cornell, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Berman Field.
Brown improved to 4-6-3 overall and 1-1-2 in Ivy League play, while Cornell dropped to 6-4-4 on the season and 0-3-1 in league action.
Cornell outshot Brown by a 10-4 margin in the opening 45 minutes, but the Bears converted on their final shot of the stanza to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Brown scored in the 45th minute when junior Daniel Taylor (West Greenwich, Conn.) floated a cross from the right side into the box, where Akeel blasted a header to the near post and past the reach of Cornell keeper Zach Zagorski for the eventual game-winner.
The Big Red came out on the offensive after halftime as Ben Feldman rifled a shot just 21 seconds into the second half, but senior keeper Josh Weiner (Armonk, N.Y.) corralled the attempt to preserve the 1-0 lead.
The Brown backline kept the Big Red off the scoreboard throughout the duration of the second half, but the home side reeled off a pair of strong shots in the last three minutes of the contest. Jake Rinow and Benjamin Williams put both shots on target, but once again, Weiner came up with a couple of stops to seal the shutout victory.
Weiner made nine stops in net for the Bears to pick up the shutout win, while freshman Nate Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.) paced the visitors with two shots in the contest. As a team, Cornell outshot the Bears by a 25-5 margin and won the battle for corners, 4-2.
