PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three different Bears scored in the first half and senior keeper Josh Weiner (Armonk, N.Y.) turned away a penalty kick in the second stanza as the Brown men's soccer team downed Boston University, 3-1, Tuesday evening at Stevenson Field. Brown improved to 3-4-1 on the season while the Terriers dropped to 3-5-1 overall.
Brown jumped out to an early lead on a goal by sophomore Jack Gorab (Newport Beach, Calif.) in the second minute, when he headed in a pass from senior Jack Kuntz (Chatham, N.J.) for his second tally of the season.
Nevertheless, Boston responded less than five minutes later as Dominique Badji picked up the play at midfield and sprinted down the left side before sending a shot past Weiner to even the score, 1-1.
The Bears rebounded with a goal by senior Voltaire Escalona (Blue Bell, Pa.) in the 19th minute to regain the lead. Senior Jose Salama (Madrid, Spain) controlled the ball about 15 yards out on the left side and sent a cross into the box, where Salama tapped in the one-timer for the go-ahead goal.
Brown tacked on the insurance goal at 28:36 when freshman Nate Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.) scored on a feed from sophomore Tariq Akeel (Rochester Hills, Mich.) for his second goal in as many games. Junior Daniel Taylor (Greenwich, Conn.) started the play near midfield and was credited with an assist.
After intermission, BU forward Badji was tripped in the box on a scoring opportunity in the 55th minute and was granted a penalty kick, but Weiner dove to his left and knocked away the shot as the Bears held on for the victory.
Weiner made five saves for the Bears in net, while BU keeper Nick Thomson made eight stops on the other end. Brown held a 17-12 edge in shots and won the battle for corner kicks, 16-5, including nine in the second half.
