Providence, R.I. – The No. 19 Brown men's soccer team (8-1-1) battled the visiting Fairfield Stags (4-4-1) to a 0-0 double overtime draw on a rainy Tuesday evening at Stevenson Field.
The Bears offense got off to a slow start as the Stags edged the Bears 7-6 in shots in the first 45 minutes of play. Brown rallied in the following 65 minutes out-shooting Fairfield 20-3, but the Bears could not get one by goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe, who tallied 10 saves for the Stags.
Senior midfielder Kevin Gavey (Fairfield, CT) posted a season-high seven shots, including four on goal, to lead the Bears' attack, while sophomore Ben Maurey (Downingtown, PA) recorded four. Voltaire Escalona (Blue Bell, PA) also had some good looks on goal, taking three shots, two of which were on net.
O'Keeffe grabbed his first save of the night when Escalona nailed a shot toward the net just 7:48 into the game, and he picked up his second save just three minutes later when Escalona headed a shot toward goal.
Senior goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss (Arlington, VA) grabbed his first of two saves in the 37th minute when Fairfield's Jon Clements sent one at the Bears' goal.
After the half, the Bears came out firing on all cylinders. Bruno took five shots, two of which were turned away by O'Keeffe, in the first 10 minutes of the second period. The Bears continued to put the pressure on the Stags, but O'Keeffe continued to shut them down.
In the overtime periods, Brown continued to apply pressure on the Stags as three of its first four shots were on goal, and in the final overtime period the Stags edged Brown 2-1 in shots.
The tie tonight was Brown's third overtime game this season, as Brown defeated Boston University (1-0) and Washington (4-3) in overtime earlier this season.
Brown will now hit the road for Ivy League contests versus Princeton (Oct. 6) and Harvard (Oct. 13).
