Bears Move into First Place in Ivy Standings with 1-0 Victory over Yale

New Haven, CT- For the second straight week, senior forward Austin Mandel (Tarzana, CA) knocked in a game-winning penalty kick for the Brown men's soccer team. Mandel scored 1:01 into overtime against Yale University to spoil the Bulldogs' senior night at Reese Stadium Saturday evening. The win improved Brown to 10-4-2 overall and moved Brown to 4-1-1 in the league, while Yale dropped to 7-7-2 and 3-3 in league standings.

Cornell, who was in first place in the league at the beginning of the night, was defeated by Dartmouth this evening. Both Brown and Dartmouth had been tied for second in the standings, but have now been vaulted into a first place tie with the Bears and Big Green winning tonight.

The Bears played solid all around as the offense combined for 17 shots, but the defense was most impressive shutting down any chances Yale had not allowing the offense any shots. Mandel led the attack with six shots, four on goal, and senior midfielder Taylor Gorman (Freeport, ME) followed with five.

The Bears had five shots on goal, three in the first and two in the second, but Yale goalkeeper Bobby Thalman made all the stops. It wasn't until 1:01 into overtime that Mandel would score the golden goal.

There were 29 fouls called tonight, 20 on Yale and nine on Brown. Brown had a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks as well.

The Bears will host Dartmouth at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov 12 in its final game of the 2011 regular season with the Ivy League title on the line. Brown will honor its eight seniors prior to the game.
