Worcester, Mass. - Junior defender Eric Robertson (San Antonio, TX) scored his first career goal just 1:02 seconds into overtime to lead the Brown men's soccer team (8-4-2) to a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross (1-12-2) on Tuesday evening at Smith Soccer Stadium.
The Bears outshot Holy Cross 8-6 in the opening half and had one look on goal but Michael Thompson made his first of four saves to keep Brown off the scoreboard. Junior goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss (Arlington, VA) made his first and only save of the game in the first stanza when Andrew Butterworth sent one his way just before the end of the period.
Dominating in the second half, the Bears rattled off nine shots to Cross's three, but still could not crack the defense. TJ Popolizio (Rexford, NY) had a good look on goal toward the beginning of the half but it was saved by Thompson, and freshman Daniel Taylor (Greenwich, CT) blasted a shot toward goal to be saved by Thompson as well. Holy Cross came right back and nearly won it with about five minutes remaining in regulation, but the shot in the crossbar as the game eventually went into overtime.
It didn't take Bruno long, however, as a shot by senior Mike Manella (Toluca Lake, CA) led to a great save in net by Holy Cross keeper Michael Thompson, but awarded Brown a corner kick. Senior midfielder Taylor Gorman(Freeport, ME) took the kick and Robertson knocked in the first goal of his collegiate career.
The Bears dominated in shots 19-9 and also led in corner kicks 6-2. Kernan-Schloss earned his fifth shutout of the year while improving to 5-2-2 overall.
The Bears will now play against Penn on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
