Ithaca, NY- The Brown University men's soccer team (7-4-2, 2-1-1 Ivy) battled No. 25 ranked and currently first place in the Ivy League, Cornell University (8-1-4, 3-0-1 Ivy), 1-1 at Berman Field this afternoon. Freshman Ben Maurey (Downington, PA) tied the game up at the 49:52 mark with his first collegiate goal, a header, after an assist from senior Jay Hayward.
After a scoreless first half, both teams came out fired up and picked up their intensity. The Big Red scored 1:46 into the second period when Peter Chodas sent the ball over to Stephen Reisert who headed one past Brown's Sam Kernan-Schloss (Arlington ,VA) in goal to give the Big Red a 1-0 advantage over the Bears.
But Bruno was not going to go down that easily, and came back just three minutes later with a goal of their own at the 49:52 mark. Jay Hayward got the ball to Maurey who headed one past Rick Pflasterer in net to even the score at 1-1. The Bears outshot Cornell 9-3 in the second period.
Both teams would battle for the remaining 40 minutes of regulation, including two 10-minute overtimes, but neither team would come out victorious. Cornell outshot Brown 3-0 in the first overtime period, and 1-0 in the second, but the Bears edged the Big Red 12-10 in total shots for the game.
Kernan-Schloss ended the game with three saves in net, while Plfasterer picked up four.
The Bears are back in action against Holy Cross at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, and will then host Penn on Saturday, October 29 at 7 p.m. at Stevenson Field.
