Three Bears Selected to N.E.I.S.L. Division I All-Stars
Providence, RI- Seniors Jon Okafor (Verona, NJ), Paul Grandstrand (Orono, MN) and David Walls (Leeds, England) have been selected to the 2010 New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) Division I All-Star team. The game will be hosted on Sunday, Nov. 28 at Harvard, but due to the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament third round game, the Bears will be unable to participate. The Brown soccer squad was also a recipient of the Division I Men's Top 10 Team Academic Award, as the team achieved a 3.39 team GPA.
Okafor, the Bears second leading scorer with 13 points on five goals and three assists, came up with the team's first goal in Brown's 2-1 victory over Boston College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last week. He has competed in 14 games this season and has helped lead the Bears to three NCAA tournament appearances in his four years.
Grandstrand, a two-time First Team All-Ivy goalkeeper and team co-captain, has competed in all 19 games for the Bears and owns a 12-3-4 record. He has allowed just 10 goals for a 0.50 goals against average that ranks third in the country, and has picked up 64 saves for a .865 save percentage that ranks sixth in the country. Grandstrand has recorded 11 shutouts this season to set a Brown record.
Walls, Second Team All-Ivy selection and team co-captain, has competed in 16 games this year and has six points on two goals and two assists. He has played an integral role in a stingy defense that has conceded just 10 goals and shutout 11 teams this year as Brown's goals against average ranks third in the country.
South Carolina topped the NSCAA Team Academic Award list with a 3.49 GPA, followed by Long Island (3.45), DePaul (3.44), and Brown (3.39).
