Bears Outlasted By Big Green, 11-9
April 23, 2005
Hanover, NH - Senior Ben Grinnell's goal with 3:47 remaining broke a 9-9 tie and lifted 11th ranked Dartmouth to an 11-9 Ivy League men's lacrosse victory over 18th ranked Brown. The loss drops the Bears to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in Ivy play, while the Big Green extended their record to 7-3, 3-1 in the Ivy League.
Brown fell behind by a 3-1 margin after one quarter, but stormed back in the second quarter to take the lead. Sophomore David Madeira (Norwich, VT) and sophomore Alex Buckley (Ridgewood, NJ) scored early second quarter goals to tie the game, 3-3.
Following a goal by Dartmouth's Ryan Danahy that gave the Big Green a 4-3 advantage, senior Chris Mucciolo (Manhasset, NY) tied the game and Madeira scored his third and fourth goals of the game to lift the Bears to a 6-4 advantage. Dartmouth's Ben Grinnell scored just before the end of the half and Brown went into the locker room with a 6-5 advantage. The Bears out-shot the Big Green, 16-4 in the quarter.
Mucciolo scored again in the third quarter, sandwiched around two Dartmouth tallies, for a 7-7 tie after three quarters.
The fourth quarter was much of the same with both teams playing with the intensity of an NCAA Playoff game. Brown took the lead twice on goals by Buckley and senior Chazz Woodson (Virginia Beach, VA), and twice Dartmouth tied the game. Grinell scored the game winner with 3:47 remaining, and Danahy netted an insurance goal with 50 seconds remaining.
Madeira led the Bears with a career high four goals, while Buckley and Mucciolo added two goals each. Junior goalie Nick Gentilesco made 13 saves in net for the Bears.
Grinnell was Dartmouth's top goal scorer with three goals and one assist, while danahy and Alec Hufnagel added two goals each. Senior Andrew Goldstein registered 10 saves in goal for Dartmouth.
