Providence, RI - Senior Britton Derkac (Virginia Beach, VA) scored a career high four goals and seniors Christopher Mucciolo (Manhasset, NY) and Chazz Woodson (Virginia Beach, VA) added two goals each to lead the 19th-ranked Brown men's lacrosse team to a 10-8 Ivy League win over Penn at Stevenson Field. The win extends Brown's record to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League. Penn falls to 1-10 overall and 0-6 in Ivy play.
Brown jumped out to a 4-0 first quarter lead on three goals by Derkac and one by Mucciolo. Penn controlled the tempo in the second quarter, scoring three times on goals by Alan Eberstein, Greg Voight and James Riordan, to cut Brown's halftime lead to 4-3.
The Bears had the better of play in the third quarter with Mucciolo scoring two goals to give Brown a 6-3 lead with 6:33 left in the quarter. Riordan's second goal of the game drew the Quakers to within 6-4 of the Bears after three quarters.
The game got even closer when Penn's Luke Dixson scored early in the fourth quarter to pull the Quakers to within one goal, 6-5. The Bears took control once again, with Derkac and Woodson scoring goals to lift the Bears to an 8-5 advantage. The two teams exchanged goals with Penn's David Cornbrooks scoring for the Quakers, and Brown sophomore Alex Buckley (Ridgewood, NJ) scoring for the Bears with 3:18 left to play.
The Quakers made it interesting at the end with goals by Alex Salihi with 1:01 remaining, and Alan Eberstein with 19 seconds left in the game to trail, 9-8. But Brown senior Kirk Teatom (Massapequa, NY) won the face-off, and Woodson scored with one second remaining to seal the victory. Teatom captured 15 of 21 face-offs for the day.
Junior Nicholas Gentilesco (Setauket, NY) had a big day in goal for the Bears, making 10 saves, including four in the fourth quarter as the Quakers peppered the Brown net with 10 shots. Denis Cole made 5 saves in goal for the Quakers.
Brown will be on the road next Saturday, April 23, against 12th ranked Dartmouth, before returning home on Tuesday, April 26 vs. Hartford.
