Providence, RI - Junior Chazz Woodson (Virginia Beach, VA) scored four goals and handed out two assists to lead the unbeaten and 16th-ranked Brown men's lacrosse team to a 14-3 victory over 10th-ranked Loyola at Stevenson Field. The victory lifts Brown to a 5-0 mark, its best start since 1991. The Greyhounds drop to 2-3 overall.
With the score tied, 1-1 midway through the first quarter, Brown senior goalie Mike Levin (Pittsford, NY) made an end-to-end run, passing off to Woodson at the Loyola goal crease. Woodson took the pass and beat Loyola goalie Dan Glaser to give Brown the lead for good, 2-1, igniting a 7-0 Brown run that lifted the Bears an 8-1 advantage at the half. Five different Brown players scored goals in the spurt, including Woodson and freshman Alex Buckley (Ridgewood, NJ) with two, and one each by junior Chris Mucciolo (Manhasset, NY), sophomore Kyle Wailes (Toronto, Ont.), and senior Charles Towers (Cold Spring Harbor, NY).
The second half was much of the same. Loyola's Pat Sheck scored to cut Brown's lead to 8-2. Wailes and Britton Derkac (quickly answered to give the Bears a 10-2 advantage. Sheck scored again for the Greyhounds, but goals by Towers and Woodson lifted the Bears to a 12-3 lead after three quarters.
Senior Rich Tuohey (Annapolis, MD) scored his first goal of the game in the fourth quarter and Mucciolo added another to account for the final score.
While Levin's end-to-end run inspired the Bears offense, he was also spectacular in the crease, making 8 of his 13 saves in the first half, including several from point blank range. Loyola goalie Dan Glazer made three saves, while Michael Fretwell added five saves.
The Bears will be home again on Tuesday, March 30, against Hartford. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson Field.
