Amherst, Mass. - The sixth-ranked UMass men's lacrosse team came away with an 18-6 win over 18th ranked Brown. The game was originally scheduled for Providence, RI, but poor field conditions due to the recent snow forced the game to be moved to Amherst.
Brown grabbed a 2-0 lead on goals by junior John Urquhart and senior All-American Jonathon Thompson. But UMass responded with four goals in a one-minute, 31-second span late in the stanza, including two by sophomore Gene Tundo and one each by Kevin Leveille and Jeff Zywicki to lead 4-2 after the first 15 minutes. The UMass run continued into the second period as Sean Morris tallied his first goal of the game at the 10:31 mark to give the Minutemen a 5-2 advantage. Tundo completed a first-half hat trick at the 7:48 mark to push the UMass lead to 7-2. Neil Lundbergcapped off the 8-0 UMass streak at the 5:31 mark with his sixth goal of the season to extend the Minutamen lead to 8-2.
Junior Mike Levin made 17 saves for the Bears as the Minutemen peppered the Brown goal with 52 shots. Sophomore Nick Gentilesco made 2 saves after replacing Levin in the fourth quarter.
The Bears will be back in action on Tuesday at home against Hartford. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Stevenson Field.
