Providence, RI - The Brown men's lacrosse team dropped its season opener, 6-4, to UMBC at home on Saturday afternoon. The Retreivers took a 3-0 lead midway through the second period before Brown got on the scoreboard with a goal by senior Will McGettigan, three minutes before halftime.
UMBC regained a three-goal lead early in third but the Bears struck for three straight goals in a four-minute time span, tying the game up at 4 all by the 5:21 mark of the period. McGettigan scored at the 9:07 mark with freshman Jack Walsh earning the assist. Walsh then scored a goal of his own 5:59 into the third and 38 seconds later, junior Mike Bernard registered the game-tying goal.
The Retreivers went on to score the go-ahead goal just two minutes later and added an insurance goal in the fourth to earn the 6-4 victory.
McGettigan led Brown with his two goals while Walsh also tallied two points with his goal and assist. Kyle Wailes earned an assist on Walsh's goal in the third period.
Brown out-shot UMBC 29-26 on the day while senior Nick Gentilesco recorded six saves in net.
The Bears will play at Hofstra next Saturday at 1 p.m.
