Bears Drop 12-11 Overtime Decision To UMBC

Baltimore, Maryland - Senior Alex Buckley (Ridgewood, NJ) scored four goals and Brown battled back from a 10-5 third quarter deficit, but UMBC spoiled the debut of Brown first-year head coach Lars Tiffany by taking a 12-11 overtime victory over the Bears in the season opener for both teams at UMBC Stadium.
With the game tied, 11-11, after regulation, the game ended in overtime when UMBC attackman Alex Hopmann beat Bears' sophomore goalie Jordan Burke (Potomac, MD) with the sudden death goal, 27-seconds into the period.
Trailing 7-5 at the half, Brown fell behind by a 10-5 margin with 5:19 left in the third quarter on a goal by Josh Porcell.
Sophomore Jack Walsh (Chevy Chase, MD) scored his second goal of the game to ignite a 6-1 Brown spurt that tied the game, 11-11, with 5:24 remaining on an unassisted goal by Buckley, his fourth goal of the game, and send the game into overtime. Buckley scored three goals in the spurt, while Walsh scored two and senior Will Davis (Falls Church, VA) one goal.
In addition to Buckley's game high four goals, Walsh registered a hat-trick with three goals, and Davis added two goals for the Bears.
The Retrievers were led by Terry Kimener, who scored three goals and dished out three assists. Hopmann, Kyle Wimer and Drew Westervely added two goals each.
Burke made his first collegiate start in the Brown goal and responded with 18 saves for the Bears.
Brown plays its home opener vs. Hofstra in Providence, R.I. on Saturday.
