Providence, RI - Nearly 150 alumni, parents, friends and student-athletes gathered at the Providence Biltmore Hotel to dedicate the Rothman Head Coaching Chair for Men's Lacrosse on Friday, April 19. Honored were primary benefactor of the endowed chair Thomas E. Rothman '76, P'11 '13and fellow lacrosse alumni donors Kenneth Fitzsimmons, Jr. '68, P'13; John Keogh '86; and Zachary Schreiber '95.

President Christina H. Paxson led the event, marveling at the passion and exuberance of the men's lacrosse alumni, parents and student-athletes.  Athletic Director Jack Hayes stressed the importance of an endowed coaching chair as a measure of respect, importance, and validation, comparing it to the prestige of an endowed professorship because, "like professors, coaches are important teachers."

Men's lacrosse head coach Lars Tiffany '90 is the inaugural chair. "I am truly humbled to be the first recipient of this prestigious honor," he said. "Endowing the coaching position is a statement by the alumni that they are 100% behind us.  Our alumni will do everything they can to ensure that the men's lacrosse program is the best it can be."

Tom Rothman closed the evening, urging student-athletes to take full advantage of their short time on College Hill and to capitalize on all that is provided to them as members of the Brown community.  His rousing speech sent fellow lacrosse alumni into impromptu song. "Step out of your comfort zones," Rothman implored. His message of diversified learning is a main ethos of Brown University.
