Hurster, DePeters Lead Brown Laxers Over St. Joseph’s, 17-9
Providence, R.I. – Senior midfielder Johnny DePeters (Woodbury, CT) and junior attackman Sam Hurster (St. Louis, MO) scored three goals each, as Brown scored early and often to gain its third straight win, 17-9, over St. Joseph's at chilly Stevenson Field.
The win lifts the Bears to 3-1 overall heading into next Saturday's Ivy League opener against Harvard at Stevenson Field. St. Joseph's falls to 3-4 with the loss.
The two teams exchanged goals at the outset of the game, but Brown scored five straight times in the opening quarter to grab a 6-1 advantage. Sophomore Tim Jacob (Palo Alto, CA) and senior Alex Jones (Annapolis, MD) each scored twice in the opening 15 minutes.
Three straight goals by St. Joseph's cut the Brown lead to 6-4 in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Rob Watts scored twice for the Hawks and Matthew Sarcona added a goal in the spurt.
DePeters scored his first goal at 6:41 of the second quarter that was answered by Scarcona to cut Brown's lead to 7-5, with 5:52 left in the quarter.
Brown broke the game open with six straight goals, three at the end of the second quarter, and three more to open the second half, to build a 13-5 advantage after three quarters, and putting the game out of reach. DePeters and Hurster each had two goals in the 6-0 Brown run.
Brown had some solid play in the goal, with freshman Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) making nine saves in his third straight start. Juniors Will Round (Mt. Lebanon, PA) and Wills Curley (Berwyn, PA) also say action in the fourth quarter, with Round making three saves.
Senior Sam Ford (Reisterstown, MD) picked up a game high five ground balls as Brown won the battle of the ground balls by a 32-19 margin. Brown was also perfect in clearing, being successful on all 14 attempts.
The Bears peppered the St. Joseph's net with 46 shots, getting off double-figure shots in each quarter. St. Joseph's finished with 30 shots.
Freshman Henry Blynn (Villanova, PA) had a big day for the Bears with a goal and three assists, while sophomore attackman Nick Piroli (Black River, NY) also scored a goal and handed out three assists.
Brown's Ivy opener against Harvard will be played at Stevenson Field on Saturday, March 16, with face-off scheduled for 7 pm.
