Sam Hurster’s Five Goals Lifts Brown Over Hartford, 14-4

Hartford, CT - Junior Sam Hurster (St. Louis, MO) scored five goals to power the Brown men's lacrosse team to a 14-4 non-league win over Hartford Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. The win lifts the Bears to 2-1 overall, while Hartford falls to 0-3.


Hurster scored early and often in helping the Bears build a 13-3 lead midway through the fourth quarter.  His five goals came on six shots. Freshman Henry Blynn (Villanova, PA) and sophomore Tim Jacob (Palo Alto, CA) scored two goals each for the Bears.


Bears' senior face-off specialist Tommy Capone (Watertown, NY) set the tone for the game by capturing 15-of-22 face-offs, including 10 of the first 12 face-offs. Capone also picked-up nine ground balls.


Freshman goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) turned in a solid performance for the second straight game, making 11 saves while surrendering just four goals in 47:42. 


Coming off Saturday's overtime win over #5 UMass, Brown came out firing on all cylinders, opening up a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes of the opening quarter on goals by Hurster, freshman Brendan Caputo (Westbury, NY), junior Stephen Chmil (Garden City, NY) and sophomore Nick Piroli (Black River, NY).


Hartford's Tate Kildonas scored for the Hawks with 1:08 left in the quarter to cut Brown's lead to 4-1 after one quarter.


Freshman Bailey Tills (Denver, CO) scored for the Bears early in the second quarter and Blynn scored late to give the Bears a 6-1 advantage at the half.


Brown opened the second half much like the first, getting early goals by senior Alex Jones (Annapolis, MD), Blynn, Hurster and Jacob to grab a 10-1 lead with 7:18 left in the third quarter. Hartford cut the Bears advantage to 10-3 after three quarters with two late goals.


Hurster began the fourth quarter with three straight goals to lift the Bears to a 13-3 advantage to put the game out of reach.


The Bears are back in action again on Saturday, March 9, hosting St. Joseph's at Stevenson Field.  Face-off is 1:00 p.m.
